In 2008 Kazzum was commissioned by theBROADWAY theatre in Barking to produce a diverse ‘community-themed' production with the aim of developing its audiences. Maybe Tomorrow... was an exciting new creative project that took place from November 2008 - October 2009.
The final performance was presented over 3 nights at theBROADWAY theatre where the audience joined us on a journey where our wishes and dreams came true, where a pile of shoes transported us to anywhere we wanted and transformed us into anyone we wanted to be. ‘Maybe Tomorrow…’ is a story of a thousand discoveries, a thousand journeys – but who could have guessed they lay at our feet all along!
This was a very special east London home-grown project. Produced in-house by theBROADWAY in partnership with Kazzum , this large scale community theatre production was developed and performed entirely by community members from the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Newham, Redbridge and Havering, working with professional artists.
People from all backgrounds and walks of life, aged 7 – 60+ worked together all year- in drama, dance, music, writing, technical, design and backstage work – to create a truly unique piece of theatre.
The project celebrated the amazing achievement of local people, and the audience were swept along on their very own journey of discovery and entertainment!
"The project was be in five phases, starting in January 2009 and culminating in three performances at the Broadway Theatre, Barking during October 2009. The project was open to all types of groups and individuals who lived or worked in and around Barking and adjacent areas and who wanted to be part of this celebration of cultural mix… it was a great success and I thank all of those involved"
Daryl Beeton, Artistic Director
Colin Holmes, a participant in Maybe Tomorrow, which was commissioned by The Broadway Barking, wrote a very honest and well-observed account of the making of the project. He entered his story into the BBC My Story Competition, “a competition for ordinary people with EXTRAordinary true stories” (competition now closed); one of the prizes is a book deal!
