‘Harmony’ was a collaborative artwork created by over 100 young people from asylum seeker and refugee backgrounds across London.

Responding to the theme of Harmony, young people worked alongside Kazzum Arts’ professional artists to create images, patterns, textures and words which capture the unique act of collaboration and of being in harmony with others.  Each individual design is a unique artwork in itself, yet when they are assembled together, a playful mass of creativity emerges to reflect the vibrant voices and perspectives of young migrants in London today.

The final artwork features 50 individual designs, digitally printed onto hexagonal tiles which are able to interlock in a limitless number of configurations.  As the images interact with each other, stories and characters emerge, filling the imagination with possibilities.  The artwork can also transform into a ‘Pelmanism’ – the simple ‘pairs’ pattern matching game played across the world to support language development, mindfulness and develop memory skills.  The artwork is animated by people as they play together; connecting, sharing and communicating in response to the young people’s vibrant creativity.

This project was created to coincide with the 21st annual Refugee Week, running from the 17th – 23rd June 2019.

The participating young people came from, Caras, Young Roots, The Refugee Council, Shpresa and Brighter Futures

The project was kindly been funded by the Big Lottery Fund and the Swan Mountain Trust.
