Made in the East End is an inspiring heritage project which brings people together to explore the archive and learn about the history of Oxford House and its role in its community.
Material Histories
‘Material Histories’ is a project celebrating the history and legacy of the textile industry in the East End. Made collaboratively by local groups and contemporary artists, 5 banners will be exhibited at Oxford House. These banners draw on the area’s centuries of textile heritage, from Huguenot silk weavers and Jewish tailors to Irish linen workers and Bangladeshi garment makers.

Material Histories Procession
The textile banners created through the ‘Material Histories’ project will take to the streets in a community-led procession from Oxford House to Whitechapel Gallery, retracing the historic routes of the East End textile industry. Featuring the commissioned artists and community makers, the parade will be brought to life through creative interventions and collective happenings along the route. The procession is part of the ‘Backyard Biennial: East’ in partnership with Whitechapel Gallery.
